Pipe explains Grands Crus decision

David Pipe has finally explained why he is leaving Grands Crus' Cheltenham target a closely guarded secret - although he would probably argue with that particular word.
The top trainer is determined to get his choice right - be it the RSA Chase or the Gold Cup - and he will be involved in some acute planning right down the 'final furlong.'

The decision on his (Grands Crus) target will be made very late in the day.

Grands Crus - along with Sprinter Sacre - is a hugely exciting horse and were he to win the Gold Cup as a novice it would rank as one of the most spectacular training achievements of all time. He is 6.50 to pull off a victory, while Long Run is at 2.75 and Kauto Star is at 4.50.
Pipe is aware of how much rests on the decision and declared: "He got three races in early for experience with just one mistake and we saw the real Grands Crus at Kempton so it wasn't a problem when his Newbury race was the only one not to be rescheduled last week and there was no Plan B."
And then he revealed the reason for the long wait declaring: "We want to see what's left in the RSA Chase where he sets the standard and the Gold Cup.
"He's a very exciting horse who worked very well this week but the fact remains the decision on his target will be made very late in the day."
